David Deleon Baker, 34, lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He moved to New York City in 2006 from New Orleans, where he had worked at The Times-Picayune for six years. He and the rest of the staff received two Pulitzer Prizes for their work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He was the only member of the 17-person design staff who did not evacuate ahead of the storm.

He waded through 5 feet of murky floodwaters the day after the hurricane hit, and he floated on a large piece of foam that had blown off the Superdome roof, pulling up a stop sign for use as a makeshift paddle.

Dave Baker sometimes has delusions of being a musician (but don’t confuse him with that other Dave Baker, or Dave Becker — all three were at the same party once). No, THIS particular Dave Baker fronted The Band That Fell to Earth during his time in New Orleans, performing, among other places, at the storied Tipitina’s nightclub as well as at an independent-music festival in Las Vegas.

The band had the distinction of being the last live music act to perform in New Orleans just before Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, playing a 2 a.m. show at Checkpoint Charlie’s on Sunday, August 28, 2005. Baker has been involved from time to time in other musical ventures as well, ranging from Commander 8 (a lo-fi, DIY solo recording project in which he played all the instruments) to writing lyrics for other bands (such as a writing collaboration with the rock band The Fantastic Ooze, now renamed Bang Crash Pow!, whose members also made the move from New Orleans to New York).

This blog is where you can read about Baker’s sporadic travels. When he’s not currently traveling, it will serve as a one-stop archive of his previous musings and photos from afar.
